Handling of Flame

The history of fire chronicles a dangerous and uncontrollable natural occurrence becoming a useful and critical tool of culture. As a tool fire accelerated society and was revered in myth and legend. Prometheus steals fire from the gods and gives it to man.

A millennia later the flame as a symbol of the modern Olympic movement is introduced by architect Jan Wils in 1928. Carl Diem creates the official torch relay in 1936. The Olympic torch is ceremoniously lit by the magnification of the noonday sun, as if stealing it from the ancient gods.

The Champion Park Flame is an interactive artwork. The central spirals can be gently spun by a participant. This interaction alludes to our historical respect for fire; controlled and careful use creating a surprising and beautiful outcome.
